# Introduction

The Legal Frameworks of the GDDS establish the legal basis for participation in and operation of the data space, enabling trustworthy, compliant, and scalable data sharing across diverse actors and sectors. They support legal certainty by helping stakeholders understand and apply the relevant regulatory requirements and by structuring contractual arrangements tailored to the needs of a federated and purpose-driven data space like the GDDS.

This pillar is composed of two key components:

* > **Regulatory Compliance,** which identifies the legal obligations applicable to data space activities, including the GDPR, the Data Act, the DGA, CSRD, EPBD, and other EU or national legislations, and supports participants in addressing them proactively;
* > **Contractual Framework,** which outlines the necessary agreements between participants, including governance and data sharing agreements.

By clearly defining rights, liability schemes, and dispute resolution mechanisms, these frameworks help reduce transaction costs, foster legal interoperability, and create a reliable basis for sustainable data collaborations in support of Europe’s Green Deal ambitions. Readers needing to understand the regulatory obligations and the contractual relationships that underpin participation in the GDDS will find the relevant guidance in this section.
